The court's mediation program comprises two full-time circuit mediators and a small panel of highly experienced and trained court-appointed mediators, who serve on a pro bono basis. The mediators hold conferences before briefs are filed in most civil counseled appeals. These conferences are designed to explore the prospect of amicable resolutions and to reduce the time and expense of the appellate process. The mediators also assist counsel and clients in clarifying and narrowing appellate issues, objectively assessing the best alternatives to a negotiated agreement, and generating realistic parameters for possible settlement. Local Rule 33.1 governs the mediation process.
